Now you get to meet him in person!

Our special guest speaker for the 2018 Christmas Party is the MVP of the 1996 Orange Bowl and Big Ten Network Analyst, Former Husker standout Damon Benning!

Damon starred for the Omaha Northwest Huskies as a quarterback and then I-back. He also lettered three times in baseball and once in basketball and earned all-state baseball honors. An honor student, Damon was his senior class president, a member of the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. Damon chose Nebraska over Iowa and Wyoming.

Description generated with high confidenceAfter his redshirt year in 1992, Damon saw action as a redshirt freshman, appearing in 10 games, and starting the Texas Tech and UCLA games during the 1993 campaign. As a sophomore, Damon saw action in 12 games as a back-up to the star-crossed Lawrence Phillips in during the 1994 national championship season. Battling a hamstring injury throughout the year, Damon played in 9 games during the 1995 championship season. During his senior year, Damon continued his valuable contributions as an I-back, receiver, punt returner and kick-off coverage specialist. Taking hand-offs from quarterback Scott Frost, Damon rushed 15 times for 95 yards and two scores. He also caught one pass for a two-yard gain and had one kickoff return for 23 yards and was named MVP of the 1996 Orange Bowl. Damon was a Doak Walker Award nominee and earned an Academic All-Big 12 honorable-mention.

Damon Benning was a four-year letterman who helped lead the Huskers to back-to-back national titles. He finished his career carrying the pigskin 270 times for a total of 1,562 yards. Damon also caught the ball 12 times for a total of 134 yards and returned 32 kickoffs for 770 yards. He finished his Husker career with 2,625 all-purpose yards. Due to his outstanding career, Damon was signed as a free-agent by the Carolina Panthers in 1997.

As a Title 1 Coordinator for the Omaha Public Schools, Damon ensures that funds are being used in compliance with Federal guidelines. He also coordinates programs to develop or strengthen professional skills in teachers and other staff members to facilitate parent involvement activities designed to enhance student learning at home as well as at school and to build greater collaboration between schools and students’ families.

Damon has stayed close to the Husker program. Since hanging up his cleats, Damon joined the broadcast field as an analyst on the Big Ten Network, NET Television, Cox Communications and has made numerous guest appearances on 1620 The Zone over the years.
